Passional Boutique & Sexploratorium

At Passional Boutique & Sexploratorium, we are committed to offering high-quality adult products and providing accurate, updated information about both the latest and classic toys. Our goal is to ensure that you have all the information you need to make an informed choice when selecting products for your pleasure. Below, we break down the materials used in many of our toys, including their benefits and care recommendations.

Soft Materials

Silicone
Silicone is an inert synthetic compound that is hypoallergenic and will not absorb into the body. It's one of the longest-lasting and highest-quality materials for toys, as it's denser and less porous than many other soft materials, which means it's easier to clean and generally requires less lubricant. Silicone toys are boilable, can be sterilized, and transmit vibrations more intensely. However, silicone lubricants can damage silicone toys, so we recommend using water-based or oil-based lubricants. Be cautious if combining silicone toys with silicone lubes—always patch test before use, as it may void the warranty.

Latex
Latex is a natural, eco-friendly rubber used for products such as inflatable toys. However, latex can cause allergies over time, so it's important to take care when using latex products. Non-latex barriers (such as condoms or dams) are recommended for safer play. Latex products should not be exposed to oils, as they can break down the material. For latex toys, we suggest using water- or silicone-based lubricants.

Spongy “Skin” Materials
Spongy materials are usually non-allergenic and latex-free. While our silicone-based spongy toys, such as VixSkin, offer lifelike sensations, they do require extra care. These porous materials may require scrubbing to clean thoroughly and can also necessitate talc or cornstarch for maintenance. However, cornstarch can lead to yeast overgrowth in certain areas, and talc has been linked to health risks, including cervical cancer. We recommend water-based lubricants and using condoms on these types of toys to minimize exposure to potentially harmful powders.

Elastomer
Elastomer is a term for medical-grade PVC or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE/TPR), which is phthalate-free and non-toxic. These soft materials are durable and flexible, but they are still prone to chemical instability compared to more rigid materials. Elastomer toys, like strokers and cock rings, require careful maintenance and cleaning to prevent degradation over time.

Jelly & Other Plastics
Jelly toys and other plastics may have a strong "new car" smell when unpackaged, which is a sign of chemical instability. Although most of these materials will off-gas after exposure to air, it’s important to check for strong odors before use. At Passional Boutique & Sexploratorium, we do not sell products with harmful chemicals like phthalates, but we recommend airing out these toys before using them.

Leather
Leather is a natural material that is often used for dildos, harnesses, and other products. While durable, leather can be difficult to disinfect, so we recommend using condoms for easier cleaning, especially for multi-partner play. Leather is also treated with oils and conditioners, which may be absorbed by latex, so we recommend using non-latex condoms on leather toys.

Nitrile
Nitrile is a synthetic rubber used in products such as penis rings and exam gloves. It’s non-allergenic, though porous and less stretchy than other materials.

Hard Materials

Glass
Borosilicate glass, a high-quality, heat-resistant material used in cookware, is ideal for crafting durable and easy-to-clean toys. Glass toys are non-porous, which makes them resistant to bacteria buildup, and they can be heated or cooled for additional sensations. Always handle with care to avoid chipping or breaking. Sexploratorium works with artisans who can repair and customize glass toys.

Acrylic & Other Hard Plastics
Acrylic provides a firm and smooth sensation similar to glass and metal, but it’s typically more affordable. Acrylic toys are dishwasher safe and compatible with most lubricants. While they’re long-lasting, they’re not as temperature-sensitive as glass or metal. We recommend acrylic toys for eco-conscious shoppers seeking durable alternatives to disposable toys.

Stainless Steel & Metal
Stainless steel is another non-porous material that is easy to clean and offers firm, temperature-conducting sensations. It can also connect to e-stim devices for enhanced experiences. These toys are durable, and while they can last for years.

Other Potential Allergens/Irritants

Animal Products
Fur, feathers, and other animal-derived materials can cause allergies, especially when used in sensitive areas. Always perform a patch test on less sensitive areas of your body, like the neck, before purchasing products made from animal materials.

Lubricants
Be sure to check our Lubricant Guide for more information on ingredients to avoid, especially if you have specific allergies or sensitivities.
